Should there be more tournaments?

Assuming most people work, (like myself), it really is impossible for me to make any tournaments during the week simply because it is always during work. Maybe make some of the tournaments in the week at night so it's possible for those who work to play? I feel like I only play tournies on weekends, and even then I usually get like one on average per week, and two if I'm lucky.

Sounds good to me. There should be data about the most active times that people play the main map, who is playing in what time zone, and that could be used to pick the best times for everyone. With random times thrown in.

Edit: also knowing the number of unique tournament players in a month will also help in choosing better times and such

How could be more tournaments, but how about if only players who have logged N hours in the main game since the last tournament are allowed to participate in many of them?

I don't think we want to promote a dead main map with countless players only showing up for playing tournaments.

Then again tournys do kill the activity in the main map.. I know after I play a tourny the last thing I want to do is go play in the main map. Especially if I lose! If I lose I wont play till the next day. lol

I support it, this will be easily done once the new point system is incorporated.

could work. could have the regular schedule, which is anywhere between 10-12 tournaments per month. than add another extra tournament every second day that requires players to log minimum 3 hours + an undetermined amount of points to ensure people dont sit to play. 3 hours every second day is an hour and a half a day, more than enough to warrant a single hour of tournaments, or 30 minutes a day.

relabel these tournaments as player appreciation tournaments. you could even add variables, like for example logging 10 hours + predetermined amount of points in those two days gives you access to 3 of the PA tournaments. The goal would be to promote activity but also reward more time with more incentives.

I want to address one of the common arguments here, which is that tournaments kill the main map. How do we know with any certainty that this is the case? How would this sort of correlation be drawn?

As long as tournaments were not scheduled too heavily during the main map's peak period (5-10PM EST) tournaments could probably be increased to their saturation point (reduced player draw) without affecting the main map.

been there done that. its pretty common knowledge to anyone whos been around for a few years now that tournaments do not promote activity in the main map. players usually wait around and chat before and after tournaments, and with only 3 players truly enjoying the tournament every other play is either disgusted or content with the experience they received. This was tested in utanks fairly extensively and tournaments did in fact harm the main map activity or not assist it in anyway.

however this doesnt mean there shouldnt be more tournaments. tournaments are just a better experience then the main map in its current state.

jordan is right, its the same chodes playing every tournament that is scheduled but ignoring the main map. make some awards for having the most points in different quarters or something and maybe the main map activity will pick up.

Lol, I think that I am probably at the forefront of everyone's mind when you say "chodes". I actually laughed out loud.

I am going to try to be unbiased with my opinion, but I'd probably recommend taking my opinion with a grain of salt since I evidently am one of those chodes.

Restricting how many tournaments I can play to how much time I spend in the main map will probably not get me to play more main map. It will likely cause me to just slowly drift away from the game. As of right now, when ever I try and play the main map I have zero enjoyment. I am having fun with my accomplishments in practice, mostly because I have a goal set that is in grasping range.

What I am trying to say is, for me its like I am hanging by a thread with Tankpit and that thread is Tournaments. I do want to get back into the main map, but I am looking to the future for when SW implements further upgrades to the experience of it. In the mean time, I want to remain as a part of this community by involving myself in tournaments. I guess I can sort of see why this may bug some people, but limiting those who play wont make tournaments any more fun. Because your not only taking out people who win often, but your also taking out the ones who don't win often. I guess I have a spirit for competition, and whether or not I win is just a bonus.

30+ people and not win as much > 15 people and win often.

That is a fabulous idea that entertains the purposes of increasing activity with a reward. Win Win on both sides. We need incentive based playing, this is huge for any game. This is a great way to increase activity while increasing the number of tournaments.

Like Rev was saying though... upgrades to the main map, or incentives to play, are what many people seem to be looking for. Also, at this day and age, new players have no draw to the game because of no seeable incentives. I hope in the future we can have game modes, objectives, something that involves competition like tournaments. At least, this is the draw for me to tournaments. The draw tot he main map is only evident in those able to put in hundreds of hours and play for a #. For most people, this is impossible, unreasonable, and simply not enough incentive.

NOTE: For the special extra incentive tournaments, there should still be a minimum cap of players so that it wouldn't be like 10 players. That would be unfair... but then again I feel like if this incentive was put in place, people might play more. I guess test trial? I dont know.

Whoever is scheduling these tournaments is a complete moron. There are 7 weekday tournaments this month and 4 of them are between 2-5 pm Pacific, which leads to results like this http://tankpit.com/tournament_results/?tid=229 and this http://tankpit.com/tournament_results/?tid=230, where you get 15 of the most dedicated players trying to battle it out with red-1 and red-2.
