Remembrance Tanks for Players Who've Died
Don't really feel like sifting through 8 pages, so if this has been brought up then please disregard.
The idea is simple: We've lost a few people over the years who used to either be known by or active in the community. I'd like to see a tank created with their old name, color, and awards. It could be left as a recruit and be a normal bot, but it would be nice to see in game. Maybe create a small bio page on the tankpit site to commemorate them. Have those of us do write ups, or copy that of what we can find from old board and forum postings. If we could find the old gathering SS's where people held 'cease fires' and add them that would help a lot. If anything it could show newer players that find us on their own what the game has meant to a generation of people, what the people have meant to the game, even with how small we have been in comparison to our earlier counterparts.
It's one of the few things that strikes a cord for me when I think about the game. To me, the little 2D tanks and my fancy awards me nothing without the people I've played all those hours with. They keep me coming back, keep me here when I do show my face, and then usually seek me out when I disappear again.
The person closest to me was Torch, or Scott Walker. Andy has a r.i.p. memoir of him in his signature, and every time I see it, I can feel the sorrow sweep over me.
If you think it's stupid, that's fine. If it's not possible, I understand. But I think if we don't do them justice in our own way, we're letting go of people that shouldn't be forgotten.

its a good idea but has anyone other than torch died in the community? With the frequency players come and go through this forum its tough to distinguish between someone who moved on and someone who passed on.

In my opinion, grieving is something to be done personally, whether that be on the forum, via your tank name / bb posts, by building a monument to them, or so on. It shouldn't be forced on everyone, the majority of people not caring about the one or two dead people that you or I care about, but instead having their own. That would just alienate players or at best turn the field into some sort of mourning graveyard.

Hmm, agreed.
In the defense of my original idea, I still think seeing a simple bot tank made after the tank of someone who's passed wouldn't be a terrible idea. Hell, it may even spark some more interest if a new player stepped into the arena and saw something other than red-1, purple-4, ect.
I'd actually sit in there and shoot/kill more bots if it was bots of past players. They don't even have to have their old awards, just simply the same name composition and I'd be happy.
Again, I agree that mourning is a personal process, hence why I stated only those that were apart of or had an impact in the community/game. Yes, the only one off the top of my head I could think of was Scott (Torch). The whole Ice Tank kid of a scandal from what i remember, but I vaguely remember Atomic Kill having been a decent player than many seemed to know and I thought she lost her life somehow. Obviously we'd need those of us that do remember to come forward and propose names, and Kirby is very efficient with the waybackmachine archiving and could probably find some stuff from the old SQUID site that had some memorials of players we could add.
I close with this thought: My father played the game along with me for much of my childhood, but he wasn't known nor does anyone else really remember him. I have no desire to see his tank come back into the game since he's passed away recently. Torch was a player that interacted with and played alongside a good bit of us and was a friend. I know that if I saw a tank in game with his name on it, I'd smile and have to shoot him a few times just because.
If you're completely against the idea it's cool, just trying to continue the talks because I don't want it shot down instantly. <3

even better; the idea of "ghost tanks" cruising around in commemoration of those we've lost might also compel some players amongst the tankpit constituency to commit suicide in order to get their name on a tank.
