987 tournament bible for tankpit
Seans Tournament Bible - 2.0, designed specifically for tankpit.
I - pregame
pregame is important. i recommend deciding on a tank well in advance, and getting comfortable with music/drink/food/smoke etc. also good to know the map you will be playing and who else is probably playing, so you have a rough/general idea of the plan going in. i recommend having your tank ready and clicking play to get the lobby with about a minute to go, and closing all other applications except task manager. as the tournament comes up and you click to enter (i personally click the map, although it makes no difference), bring task manager up and set java.exe to realtime as the game is loading. this will make the game a little smoother and more responsive.
II - filling
you always want to fill first, obviously. i recommend breaking the screen down into 9 5x5 squares, obviously in a 3x3 arrangement. i like to radar all 9 on the first screen i enter (or if there is water or mountains or obstacles or whatever, it might not make sense to do all 9, or you might be unable to). as soon as you get off that screen, i recommend finding the nearest bot that is the same color as you. i find that you can keep your fill time in the 5-10 minute range if you conscript a bot into helping you fill. there are 3 messages you need to know that will make this easy, and the only difficult thing is scrolling back and forth while you're moving or radaring or whatever. the messages are:
"use the radar" - makes the bot radar. its good to position yourself upon landing on the screen so that the bot is in the middle of one of the 9 5x5 squares. don't waste time trying to perfect this tho, you just want to be close more/less.
"out of the way" - as i land and hit use the radar, i radar myself. the bot will say "sure!" and radar. as soon as this happens, im usually either picking up a box that i radared, or moving, or radaring another spot. i click "out of the way", and the bot will drive somewhere. as soon as i click out of the way, im usually scrolling back to use the radar at the next opportunity, again while im moving or radaring or picking up a box or whatever. usually if you are really good you can get the bot to get off about 1 radar to your every 2, but of course when you "move" the bot it generally won't stay in the 3x3 grid that would be ideal. an important thing to remember, bots will move AWAY from you, not towards.
"buzz off!" - this makes the bot teleport, usually a screen or 2 over. i send this as we're finishing the screen and i want to chase it onto another. sometimes it will go somewhere stupid or useless, in which case you should probably radar a screen on your own or find another bot in an unradared area.
basically you want to keep doing this until you get ers. as soon as you get ers, ditch the bots and open up on an area that looks nice and ripe. if possible, i recommend breaking down the map into quarters, and staying in 1 quarter of the map, while keeping track of where other people are filling more/less everytime you map. keep track of who is ranking (newbs) and make a mental note, because these might be your kills for cap in about 15-20 minutes when you are lieut and they are serg.
III - the beginning
as soon as you get to 50-60 ers, start fighting. if you have a solid fill (under like 8 or 9 minutes), i recommend you find a private or corporal bot. land on its screen, radar, and start shooting. 7 shots to make a recruit tele, 8 for a private, 9 for a corp. its minus 1 for each if you stop shooting it and it gets 2 shots off at any point. as soon as you hit the number of shots to make it tele, start picking up whatever you radared (you will be private at this point). follow the bot, and kill it to make corporal. radar and pick up everything you can. if someone comes to fight you, definitely fight back and maybe try to make serg. your goal here is to get to 76 76 76 76 76 or 84 84 84 84 8x at the earliest convenient opportunity. its important not to force the issue and put yourself out of rhythm, but also equipment is much more scarce from 20-40 minutes than it is in the first 15 or so. you want to take advantage of that and try to max your ers early on, so you can radar aggressively or recklessly the rest of the tournament (1 hour) without worrying about ers. if its a 2 hour tournament, you can find this opportunity later (somewhere between :45 and 1:15 usually), and it makes no sense to do it now. most tournaments are 1 hour though, so you want to capitalize on the abundance of equipment and put yourself in a position to be aggressive the rest of the way without worrying about ers.
as soon as you get your equip up, you have 2 options. either find a small group of players pphing (almost everyone is pphing at this stage) and start fighting as hard as you can (try to stay on the edges of their screen and don't worry about using homers, you still need to make lieut so there will be a minimum of +8 homers waiting for you), or find a corporal bot and kill it. keep pphing as hard as you can, and as soon as you get under 40-50 duals (or make lieutenant), try to fill fight (equip should still be somewhat abundant). fill fighting bots is especially effective, due to their predictability. you teleport onto its screen, radar, and then either fire 7-9 shots into it and start picking up boxes, or pick up boxes and then start shooting it. sometimes people will follow you and land on your screen, so as soon as the bot teles you have someone to fight. if you pick up someone competent, try to stick with them until they make it obvious that they need to fill. keep fill fighting at lieut, and turn off homers as soon as you get to 92 homers. the only time homers should be on from this point forward is if you are trying to kill someone, or its the end, and you don't plan on refilling.
IV - the mid game
by about 20-25 minutes, you should be lieut with a partially filled xp bar (if you aren't even lieut, you will either be pphing the rest of the tournament or trying to win by rank. if you are trying to win by rank, you shouldn't even really be reading this guide. try to kill everyone and hope for the best.). at some point your dual shots will fall into the 0-25 range, and you will need to aggressively fill or stick to radaring screens with bots. either way tho, you want to fill back up to 92 92 92 92 x (x being anywhere from 55 to 70 usually) quickly, while equip is still plentiful. you also want to be trying to be in the neighborhood of those newbs who ranked without filling. they should be serg by now and they will probably be being attacked by other people. try to find one and see if hes killable. you can either fire everything you have at him, or shoot whoever you think is least likely to move (until it looks like he might die of course, at which point you better be shooting him) if you want to max points. i usually always try to max points, but this is a useless endeavor if you don't give yourself opportunities to get kills. if you miss the kill, thats fine. press / to see if hes coming back, or find someone else as quickly as possible. if opportunities to get points come along in the interim (i.e guy teleports to you and starts fighting you), do not hesitate to keep beasting. you want to get ahead of as many people as possible so you have some flexibility later on, and if you are number 1 its good to open up a huge lead to discourage others and give yourself as much time as possible in the end game to do what must be done.
keep finding newb sergs, and also keep track of newbs who might be corporal and working towards serg. don't be afraid to fight them, but don't kill them unless they make serg. if someone else shows up, fight them, and let the newb keep getting points to rank. eventually you will run out of newbs to try and kill, it'll be late in the tournament, or other factors will intervene. if you get a kill and make captain, beast as hard as possible for most of the remainder of the tournament and try to get 1v1s. if you don't, keep beasting but try to avoid 1v1s and stay near the action/snipe. at some point, you might need to turn homers back on. don't try to kill players who are clearly good unless they are vulnerable to being turned on (2nd/3rd shade, still shooting, people shooting them with other people who could possibly start shooting them, etc). if they get turned on and are able to armor and teleport, don't bother following them. just keep shooting whos there.
V - the end game
i usually make the 15 minute to go mark the cutoff. if you are still lieut with 10-15 to go, you might as well stop trying to force kills and just pph as hard as possible the rest of the way and hope you can get a kill in the armor fighting at the end, and be ahead of the other captains. theres no point trying to force a kill, because even if you get it, you aren't making major, and you are probably going to fall off the pace being set by the top pphers, so you likely aren't going to be cupping at captain anyway. if you are captain, you want to be fill fighting for the most part and taking a read on the situation. try to determine how many people can make major, and then cut that number in half. that is roughly the number of majors you should prepare for. if its 2 or 3, you can opt to pph the rest of the way (mostly try to 1v1 or fight bots as you fill) and try to 99 at captain, guaranteeing a cup if there are 2 or fewer majors. if it looks like you wont cup at captain, or you feel like you should make major (usually you should), you want to be keeping track of the lieuts who are getting mobbed or dieing down or whatever, or the newbs in the game who are somehow lieut. try to kill them, but try not to waste homers until you need to. if you want to mix points and kill potential, again, stay on the edges, and don't even shoot the target (shoot other people less likely to move) until/unless they are about to die.
at some point between :48-:55, you should be trying to get off your final fill. a safe estimation is about 7 minutes for 92-100 duals. your goal here should be to run out of duals (and probably only have about 20-40 shields left) as the tournament expires. there is no reason to fill farther than 60-70 duals if there are only 4-5 minutes left. as soon as you get to the point where you think adding equipment might be useless and a hindrance, turn missiles and homers on and find somewhere to beast. if you can find a solid 1v1 and you want to max points, turn armors on (try to do this above half fuel tho, you dont want to attract all kinds of people who will end up supermobbing and killing you if you armor at 110 fuel). don't be afraid to armor yourself down into the 30s or whatever. however if the number of armors gets as low as the number of duals, you should probably leave, and you shouldn't really armor until the opportunity presents itself; no fuel on the screen, or time constraints. if you need a kill with about 2 minutes to go, assess the map and see whats going down. try to find someone whos getting mobbed or just a group of people fighting randomly. eventually someone will get turned on in the inevitable last minute armor battles. you don't want this person to be you! so again, try to stick to the edges and scope if need be.
if you follow my guide to the letter, your xp should at least be in the 90s, and hopefully you will be captain (maybe major). if its a 2 hour tournament, basically the mid game just gets extended, and you will need to boost your ers again at some later time, again usually between about :45 and 1:15. i try to just pph most of the way, and i dont worry about kills unless im lieut with half an hour to go and there are majors, or if im captain with no kill with 10-20 to go. if you make major, just beast as hard as possible unless you see a captain getting killed. there are usually no more than 1 or 2 colonels, and a good portion of the time there are none.
VI - intangibles
just some random thoughts here.
- don't worry about finding a ferry early on, unless its deep six or you can wander into something in apps. regardless, you should be radaring every screen instead of hopping from island to island or down the coast. that being said, sometimes a ferry can be useful for a quick refill later on, especially if you find one where people haven't filled recently, like in certain areas in iceland, a section of the ocean in apps, direction in d6, the river in the nile, one of the lakes in castles (could be good to stash the ferry here too if there is more equip, for later), etc etc. more often than not a ferry isn't going to win you the game, but it could lose it for you, especially if you try to stay glued to it or spend too much time being useless trying to get one.
- try to avoid picking up boxes of 1 armor or 2 homers or shit like that. if you use 1 of something, try to use 5 of that same thing before you pick up any equip. this isn't that hard.
- don't kill non bot corporals if you're lieutenant, ever. this just makes you a fucking retard
- don't try to fill in the wake of the mini mob. you want to either be out in front, or along the sides.
- when refilling, try to consider areas of the map that haven't seen a lot of action in at least 15 minutes.
- don't be afraid to bust out angle shots, but remember, when you do this, the target will usually move a turn or 2 later, so you should either be shooting someone else or moving yourself.
- anytime you fire off 2 shots in a row at someone who is low but good, they are probably mapping. if you're turn is first, start radaring or picking up fuel or equip or mapping yourself after the 2nd shot. if you're turn is 2nd, you might be able to get a 3rd shot in.
- don't use missiles, unless you don't plan on filling again. the only RARE exception to this is if you are minus 5 on homers, and you don't think you are going to use homers again + can get off at least 4-5 missiles before you pick up equip again. this almost never occurs though, and really makes absolutely no difference as long as missiles remain the same damage as homers.
- try to avoid both using homers, and shooting the ground. this along with intelligent filling plus being in the neighborhood for kills are probably the 3 most important things in the tournament.
- try to anticipate in 1v1s. if you get 2 shots in a row off, your target is either going to teleport or move somewhere more often than not. use this turn to do something productive, instead of likely shooting the ground. either get fuel yourself, radar, or pick up a box of equipment.
- if you radar a bunch of equipment in the middle of a fight (and are low yourself), try to pick up as much of it as is reasonable. don't worry about pissing the other guy off, hes going to have to spend about a minute later on acquiring what you just did in about 12 seconds.
- don't be afraid to fight people who are ahead of you, unless its late in the tournament and you can see how you fighting them will DIRECTLY screw you and lead you to lose out on cup position. usually these players are in the top group for a reason, because they are fucking good. stick with them and use them to drag you passed everyone else, and also make mental notes of how long it takes both you and them to pass certain people so you can try to generalize the gaps. the only time you shouldn't be fighting specific people is if the person is A) the only one ahead of you and its late, and you want to beat this person in points/or you don't have the equipment (in which case do whatever you can to fuck around and mess with this person until they get the idea) or B) guy who gets a rank kill late in the tournament and will rank ahead of you if he promos
- like jordan said, people seem to have mental blocks when it comes to seeing dots on the minimap or bots just sitting there; they won't fill in that area, they assume its a player, who the fuck knows. i've never really figured this one out, but my advice would be again to watch each time you map and see which ones are moving and which ones are stationary. avoid areas (for filling) by the moving dots and where they've been, and don't hesitate to go to the stationary (bots) and either radar are it or if its later on use it as a 7-9 shot fill fight opportunity.
- if you get killed, you shouldn't be in TERRIBLE shape if you've followed my advice on equipment, unless you're one of those mid-late game periods where equip is scarce for the most part and/or you don't know where the wet areas are. fill back up, but don't bother going beyond like 40 ers unless its convenient. theres no need to overfill and at this point if you die again you are probably fucked anyhow.
- use the scope! too many people just recklessly drive or teleport in counterproductive situations. using the scope properly is a skill in and of itself. driving to the edge of the screen to get equip/fuel/angle/w.e with autoscroll on to recenter is also a good move in a decent number of situations.
- you should be toggling autoscroll on and off throughout as you run into different types of situation. this is not hard to do and pretty common knowledge.
- try to fire through your targets as much as possible, especially if there are other targets behind them or a fuel can that they might move to.
- use buzz off to get same colored bots off your screen if you're fighting someone for points. this makes them move last, stay longer, and gets you more of what you want.
more to come later. this is still raw and more blueprint/outline than anything
I - pregame

If confronted about shady kills on the forum, always go with the 'it was a die down' excuse even if it was really a blatant, planned out fk. That's a big one

same, i think all of those small details that a lot of people avoid/don't pay attention to really stack up after the hour is over and might be the difference between, say, an 83 and a 96 xp
(a pretty interesting piece that sean put together, i think a WC is on the way)

nahhhh
sometimes I go in on autopilot and try to stay simple, only working with what I've conditioned myself to do. its definitely hard to bring the same effort every time, and it definitely does suck the fun and magic out of the game at times.
think about it this way tho; if you're going "simple" and consistently top-tier/competitive, you must be doing some things right and in all likelihood have similar/more potential than me. I just posted this because a lot of people have been asking me questions recently, and instead of answering the same things I'd rather just have something I could easily reference. the post is still a mess though (I lold at kylemac saying its a wc entry) and more stream of consciousness than anything, ill probably try to refine it and make it more presentable over time. I do think if people worked with the same info/knowledge and style I do, I might be a little more hard pressed to casually drop 99s..
and I think maybe revolutionize the first 20-30 minutes ;)

calm down hondo. I did give you bronze everyone knows it.
Ascendency had a 25 dual shot lead on me reaching captain and I had double that on #3 copperhead (74 silver) I went for a 2nd full fill spent about 4-5mins not shooting anyone and no one had passed me. I had a 79 exp for being 2nd place the first 45 minuets. It's pretty clear the wheels fell off at the end. Sean wasn't playing for 10 minuets and was 2 points behind you. I fell 6 points in about 9 minuets of literally not shooting at all.
great article though 987

sean is simply faster than everyone else, whether it's due to comp or clicking skillz. just from what i've noticed, he gets that extra shot on you in 1v1s. makes all the difference in the world. only other person i'd say is that fast is warrior

I do not really know you mega, but I must agree. Sean is obviously very talented (see above), but on top of that he has uncanny speed - that I mention pretty much every tournament I play against him in because it drives me nuts that he is constantly getting a double action on me. I am not sure about warrior, the only person that I have noticed on Seans speed level is Sean.

I know I'm a little late but: 987, this is fucking amazing...
Halfway through the read, my girl walks in the room, laughs out loud and goes, "Whatever you're looking at must be intense...Jesus Christ you look like you're reading your obituary..."
I've always said it, 987 is God. Get at me Sean...

one thing id like to add in that ive noticed in the few tournys ive played.
Some of the best spots to fill are where bots are. Ive noticed, especially on the initial fill, people typically dont teleport to other tanks and majority dont even look to see if its a bot or a player. So at around 5-6 minutes, filling near bots can be what sets you up for an early fill. This also works later on in the tournament, especially if bots have grouped up.

Yes to a point.
Equipment layouts are random the only real advantage a person can have is by tracking the whereabouts of other players filling paths. If someone drives right past me from the left side of my screen I won't be going left to look for equipment. if on my first screen I land 4 ers I am at a HUGE advantage assuming those ers find a lot more boxes. On the flip side we have all gone 15 boxes without any ers. It's seriously amazing how much I've dissected this game since I found tp1. My brain is going in 10 directions when playing while as when I was younger I played a much more simplistic style.
