The Art of the Raid

First off let me give you my stats and some background on my computer.

Mac Pro 17inch 8gigs of memory, 2.87 gHz i.7 Proccessor etc. NOT a gaming computer, its for design and shit.
My mouse is a pen on a wacom intuos 3 tablet, set to snap screen. (havent used a real mouse in years.)
Wireless internet, and i ping anywheres around 25-34 average. I lag a lot when it comes to a ton of tanks, and will get out turned most of the time 2-1. Also im prone to getting kicked from the internet at random.

I usually have aim open (for aow raids) and Spotify is a must for music. I play with sound off.

1 PRE RAID

----------------------------------

• During the lull before slamming into tanks i put myself in almost a pre-meditative murder mind set. I stalk the field of its players, and get my mind focused on killing. Scanning your surroundings is important.

• If im going to be in a situation where im going to be raiding people, there's certain things i pay attention to. I look to see who's on the field, who will be raided first, then who will follow afterwards. I mentally pick my targets early on, and pick them based on how they can handle raids, or based on ranks, as well as the obvious combination of both.

EQUIPMENT

• FILL YOUR EQUIPMENT. (this really shouldnt have to be said.) I make sure to have filled in areas that other teammates have not so there's an ample amount of fuel revealed across the map, which will reveal fuel paths that the raidee could potentially go down ( this comes into play later on.)

• Make sure your EQ is filled to the brim, especially if you're the higher rank on the field. Higher ranks means more radars can be used, and radars are CRUCIAL.

Always have duals and Homings turned on. Missiles are essentially worthless UNLESS you're raiding in crazy maze towards the rocks, homings tend to be sapped up in maze and its counter productive to waste them. Another acceptable time to use missiles is if the raid has extended for so long homings are becoming scarce, lots of kills come from homings and you dont want to be stuck shooting the ground and miss a kill.

2 INITIATING THE RAID

----------------------------------

CALLING TARGETS

Calling targets is an art form in itself. It takes a lot of observation and time on the field to understand each player, and the right targets to call in the right order. One bad call can lead to your team being over turned and the momentum of the map switches. Having a successful raid means keeping the momentum in your favor without slowing down or giving up the field.

• Basing targets of ranks: Depending on the situation, when i pick targets i tend to call on the lower ranks first that can be put to more use. Choosing the lower rank targets gives the other team members a chance to rank up, so when the higher rank targets are picked if they kills have gone in favor of the players who needed them, there's more of a chance for them to rank even higher along with those who were higher rank before.

For example: Red has 1 Col. 1 Maj, 2 Capts and 3 lieuts. and The map has has: 2 Gens, 1 Maj, 3 Captains, 1 lieut.

The right order of things should go Lieut - capt - maj - gens. In the grand scheme of things this provides the largest amount of possible ranking kills that will be beneficial to the red players to move up in rank evenly.

• Basing targets off of skill: Certain players take differently than others, and knowing how certain people can manage situations is a key skill to learn. You need to know your enemies weakness, and know their rhythm, some people can crush a 8 man mob, but a solid 4-5 working together can take down any of the best players in a small amount of screens. Some people i find a lot more predicable than others, which means its a good day for me, a bad day for them a good percentage of the time.

IT TAKES A GROUP TO RAID

• A Raid is NOT effective if the group is not together. When starting the raid its vastly important that you dont start raiding until everyone is on board and full. If youre trying to kill someone and you waste 20 duals in a 1v1 spamming help enemy and everyone else is still filling you wont succeed and the chances of the person you want to kill calling a brb or leaving map after emptying and refilling becomes greater. Sometimes its good to initiate the target just prior to raiding them to make sure they dont quit out of the map, but only if you feel your teammates are close to full and on their way.

You want to stalk your prey, show up about two screens away from the player and call base. This way your fellow team members will see the target close by and know who you are interested in. They should show up on the screen you call base on, to which you can jump on your target together.

3 TEAMWORK BASICS

----------------------------------

RAID BEGINNINGS
The first 1-3 screens are crucial to when it comes to figuring out your targets habits. How many shots they shoot per screen before teleporting, their over all rhythm of movements. This is where you should be paying most attention if you want to predict and dictate any raid you take part in. Pay attention to how many duals you fire till you fire a homing. On average you can lay in 2-3 duals per screen before teleporting without using a homing missile.

WORK TOGETHER
• This should go without saying that if you aren't working together, you're more than likely working against each other. It is absolutely important that you have designated people for certain tasks on the field. Each raid there should be always 1 person radaring when he lands on the screen, and the rest should always plant mines when they land. The faster players should always be looking to steal fuel when possible. For Teams there should be a designated caller, with a backup once a raid is called on the original caller.

RADARS - The person radaring should ALWAYS be the one landing on the screen first. A lot of the times hes landing with the player and has an extra 1-2 turns in before the rest of the people show up. So upon radaring before the team hits map he can be revealing the hidden fuel allowing for the coming players to sap this fuel up before the player taking the raid can use it.

MINES - Cannot stress how important mines are in game when raiding. A player running into a mine causes a significant turn loss for them and gives you extra time to steal fuel and plant more mines. If you are not the radar, you should plant mines everytime you land, it should be second nature. Them seeing you plant mines makes them less confident that the fuel in the area isnt as freed up as it was, forcing them into new areas if they havent radared.

CALLER - The raid caller should be the most conscious of the field, the most understanding of the situation at hand and know how to pick certain targets. The backup should be just as good. Bad calls = bad raids. Even if not an organized team, on the field the person with the most field knowledge will more than likely arise to dictate how the raids go with the HELP ENEMY calls.

4 OPEN UP

----------------------------------

The goal of the beginning of the raid is to waste his shields or catch the person taking slipping (its more of a rare thing when this happens, and usually involves a bad tele/fuel steal.) The best way to decimate a players shields is to make sure dual shots are the only thing hitting the player. The more duals used the more shields will be wasted. Players make the mistake of just shooting from wherever they land, this causes the person taking to get more shots off and get out with minimal shield usage due to homings = a single shot.

SPACING - The biggest early mistake is that people tend to land on the target, rather than around him. This usually allows for 4 people to be right on top of him while the others shoot homings. This is not good to waste shields. The more spacing you have to open up for duals the better. Its always good to be observant of how and where your teammates land, because you can alter yourself to put you in the better position to fire off duals.

COUNT SHIELDS This skill takes a little bit to understand but you should be able to figure out how many shields the target is using per tele. Now i dont mean you try to physically count each shield used, but you should be aware of how many the target may have used and when hes out of them.

5 RAID RHYTHM

----------------------------------

TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Raid rhythm is where speed comes in. This is my most potent ability because i know how my computer functions and when to press map, and im very good at reading a players movement.

Once you understand how the person taking the raid takes, then its quite easy to maintain your speed to be with him on each screen. Raiding is psychological as fuck, and trust me people notice you when youre on their tail and landing with them while your teammates homings are still hitting them. You want to make that player sweat buckets that they know you are not giving them slack.

The goal here is to try to not use homings unless forced to.

PRE TELE This to me, is the art of predicting when the target is mapping, and predicting where they were land, or if you hit the sweet spot to where their teleport registers on the map and you can land a fraction of a second after they had just landed right on top of them, giving you the perfect opportunity to plant mines. (The ultimate pre tele next to the fuel steal.) Calculating this varies but, the way i go about it is, i usually dump 2 shots into the target, or if they shoot twice i will tend to hit map a good half a second after my second shot or their second shot. This way im not mapping too early and missing their teleport, and not too late to where im not first on the screen.

This usually gives me an 80% hit rate on their teleport registering, allowing me to stick right on top of them and drop mines down, or a radar. Once you get this down you can stay on top of the target and then later on learn how to predict their teleports and learn how to dictate their movements.

PREDICTION
The goal with predicting teleports comes with the thought of fuel stealing. Its a lot easier to predict the movements of a target if you have a clear path of the fuel route that they intend on taking. You dont want that to happen and you dont want them to have that option. The goal is to disrupt the target from having it go to his rhythm, when they get in that, then its cakewalk. They shouldnt be allowed to be comfortable. You want them saying "FUCK" each time they land. Dudes like cujo and warrior when they get in a rhythm its just a walk in the park for a raid take. You want to throw a stick in their spokes.

You also dont want to all land on the same fuel, i notice alot of people aim for the most obvious fuel. sometimes thats the case but oftentimes if the target is a seasoned vet they arent going to fall for that. Think out of the box, the more fuel taken up the less fuel for the target. If you notice youre all still landing on the same fuels, take the corners route. People tend to aim dead center for fuel, to combat this, aim for the corners of the screen, chances are youll wind up taking the fuel the target was hoping for. I find most of my fuel steals come from putting myself in the targets head and where i would want to go to keep myself being the one in control.

Also Players tend to aim for any fuel thats right next to each other, this is a weakness, but the player will usually teleport earlier to make sure they get those 800 and 900 cans fresh next to each other. If you see two fuels like that its best to teleport earlier. Targets foam at the mouth for a full fuel bar if they can help it.

DICTATION People can sometimes be relatively easy to predict when it comes to fuel, they usually have their route chosen for them and most players will start off in a lesser fueled area then take into the wetter areas. Im well aware of this, so i make it my goal to keep them from getting to where they want to go. Presence is everything on the field, and if you plan it right and position yourself well, chances are you can keep them from getting to the mother land. When the target is getting low on shields and now making more cautious teleports i switch my teleports up just a little bit. If i know where they want to go ill start teleporting on the brinks of those areas so when they map they see a tank in their way waiting for them to land, most times this intimidates the player to react differently and take a different route winding up with them not going where they wanted to initially and more than likely will wind up in a less than desirable spot.

6 THE FINISHING TOUCH

----------------------------------

RELENTLESS FORCE
The whole raid should be blood thirsty and violent. There shouldnt be a doubt in your mind that this person will die, and the faster they die the more satisfying it is. When its obvious the target is fucked that instinct to kill should kick in ten fold and at this point homings can be used when needed if youre convinced that hes out of shields and one mis tele is the end for him. Personally i stick on the target till the very end. This is how i usually come out with tons of kills.

The player when losing shields wont be as daring, their teleports will be less informed, their plan tossed out the window, and their basic instincts of survival kick in. Theyre a wounded goat with a pack of wolves hot on their tail and the scent of blood is ripe in the air. This causes the target to act more sporadically, take longer teleports, teleport earlier. All this takes is a little adaptation. This is where i aim for the brutal fuel steals the most, knowing the target is aiming for places to land where the least duals can hit him, because at this point he cant withstand a dual pounding from 5 + tanks. So aim for fuels near rocks, crevices etc. Force him into the open where the others can dump duals into his tank and force him to slip up.

AIDING THE KILL
This is something i rarely seen done. Too many people are hungry for the kill that they dont allow the kill to go to the right rank. IF you do not need the kill you should stop shooting if the tank is obviously dead to allow the person who needs it most to rank. Mine the player in, steal any possible fuel while the person who needs the kill puts in the final rounds. Pisses me off to no end when gens steal kills like lieuts.

7 SHIT TO NOT DO

----------------------------------

DRIVING
Driving to fuels, picking up eq in the midst of the raid, are no nos. They do more harm to the raid than good, it gives the target extra time to get out and youre lagging your teammates more than anything. Moves should only be made in 5 spaces or less in a raid screen. Teleports are more efficient. and you should be full on eq so theres no need to pick up shit every screen.

EQUIPMENT DO NOT RUN OUT. After each raid you should at least fill your tank to 95%. low eq can cause you to miss a kill. you want your main eq to be full with ERs never extending below half capacity AT MAX.

PRE MINING
This is a pathetic and cheap way to gain a kill, i see no skill in mining a map ahead of the target to thwart him. It shows weakness and a lack of confidence in your skills. It pisses off the target and can possibly lead to him not wanting to take if hes not getting treated with respect and fairness on the field.

Had fun typing this out. and im sure ill add more to what i may have forgotten. This is just my personal thoughts on raids and how i go about it. Hope its a good read for yall. :wc:

good shit but it seems you added too much shit just for the sake of adding more shit. I think the only thing that needs to be mentioned is timing, which is very briefly mentioned in your guide.

regardless, this can help anyone who still havnt grasped the concept of raiding on a higher level.

I was half asleep typin this at like 4 am, theres things that definitely need more detail and im currenty too drunk to do it now since i just arrived to my vacation spot. Theres some more situational things id like to put in here but i also wanted to make this a guide for anyone in general to learn from and understand situational raiding. This is just the backbone for now. Itll be refined and additions will be made. Just hope for now anyone can at least take something from this. Good raider make a tougher but more enjoyable game for all.

yeah it definitely serves its purpose for players just coming back to grasp why it feels like some people are on speedhack when raiding.

However, the timing for raiding is almost always the same unless someone is camping on map screen waiting to get lower (good tactic in rare clutch moments)
