How many tournaments have you played?

It took me over 20 tournaments for people to stop mobbing me / treating me like an easy target.

You need to remember that most of the guys who cup consistently in tournaments...a lot of them have two or more rusty swords, over the 3 generations of this game, maybe 1 rusty in BF, 1 rusty in TP - that's 1,000+ hours of game play, and probably 200+ hours dedicated to tournaments on the side. You're competing against guys who have over 10x as much experience as you do.

It's normal to be targeted in your first few tournaments. But then you get better at it, and they stop it. Eventually, when you get low, they'll shoot homing shots at you, but the moment that you get your fuel and get bright color again, they will leave and attack someone else. That's how you know your tournament game is improving.

Before, in my first 10 tries, even if I got my fuel / color bright again, 5+ people from different colors would continue mobbing me across the map. Nowadays, if I get low, people will chase, but if I get bright colored again / get fuel, they almost always give up. I get mobbed only when I'm driving around insufficient / with zero fuel left.

It takes time, bro
