Re: Tankpit
How didn't it work?
I don't recall anyone making pph tanks besides lefty and shingra and DADDYLEGIT and liq. But lefty and shing didn't really pull the faggot moves of quitting when more than one person shot them, or only playing when there was a certain rank in so they could get max points.
That leaves just DADDYLEGIT-Liq and their late-night faking in water maps.
I'd say 2 players out of dozens makes it a success.
People just played like faggots because they were afraid of racking up deaths/getting death medals and losing ranks. But that's a different story altogether.

Guys.... Running tankpit has nothing to do with cost. Its such a low bandwidth game. Cost to run tankpit is less than 50$ bucks a year. So stop ducking claiming that this is a cost issue. Stfu.
The people that run the game simply have no interest to invest any more time into it. They have decided that they don't want to run a game when they know it is now hackable. They can't stop the hackers from playing the game with custom code so they rather shut the whole thing down and ruin it for everybody just because their security is inadequate and they are too lazy.or incompetent to fix it.
This is the actual real story about why tankpit went down, anything else is PR spin. They will not admit to this publicly
If you ever want to see BF up and running again and you have game server programming knowledge, PM me and we can start working on some server code. I have the last version of working BF client code from playbattlefield.com and we will simply create a server app that supports the original client code.
That's my 2 cents.

lol, if the rights to the game are going to go from one party who hasn't been in touch/learning from the last 5+ years to another then you guys might as well just move to utanks. for the record, this isn't utanks for the sake of utanks, this is utanks for the sake of not investing about a year into a database that will cease to exist.
like zub said, i think a lot of us felt it would be about a year. we were close enough, rofl.
we were 9 months in dude. whatever though, i'm not even going to bother getting into the facts and comparisons because A) you would ignore them and come back with your own pre-loaded favorable statistics and B) its all irrelevant atm regardless

Pretty good opportunity for me to tell you all about uTanks.
Have you ever wanted to shoot two-dimensional tanks with a two-dimensional tank that YOU control? Have you ever wanted to spend countless hours shooting the same tanks and wondering "how does picking up fuel repair their tanks?" Have you ever wanted to TELEPORT a tank? You heard me right folks... teleporting tanks.
What if I told you that you COULD? Now, I know what most of you must be thinking; "zomg dewd, dat gAme must cost lyke 60 bucks yo." How much would you be willing to pay for a game like this? $30? $60? $2,000??? What if I told you that you could shoot tanks, teleport and control a tank of your own for FREE? I'll give you a few seconds to absorb all of that.
It's true, you can have countless hours of free fun playing uTanks, courtesty of the good people at badsheepgaming. Thanks to their ingenuity and good looks, they have made a game of such incredible magnitude free for all to play. Log on, get your tank ready and have a blast with tens of players! Be the best tank blaster and you could see your teleporting tank on our leader boards. What are you waiting for? Hop on over to http://www.utanks.com to get started!

and naw phr33k is right, while he was doing the work for playing the game with custom graphics he dabbled in creating a dtt. once he figured it out he told the devs who took the game down, I guess to patch it. I knew right away after a week and the game was still down they couldnt patch it, which is why I knew (and even posted several times in this thread) the game wasnt down for hosting problems.
Also I remember asking earlier in this thread, if the game was down because it could be hacked, would you prefer the game get shut down or continue on the way bf had. obviously tp devs chose the former.

All I heard in this tread is an assumption. You have zero proof you are going based on something that is not fact therefor it must be an assumption. I care not to argue about it any further. Even if what you say is true in reality its still only an assumption on your part and on phreeks part.

no assumption. I was talking to phr33k alot when we were doing the graphics and shit. He told me he figured away to create a speedhack if you will, I just said dont spread it etc. he had zero intentions of spreading it, showed the devs what he found and that night the game was taken down. I hinted towards it a few times in the thread. made that spiel last page(?) as a way of confirming the games down without actually confirming why. devs made an accurate choice imo, they couldnt protect their game from hacks so they shut it down before it was far too late. Dont need a second bf style run.

you realize he created all the dtts in bf and such? you honestly think it would be that much harder for him to hack basically the same game?

I wasnt around for BF or PBF. But yeah I know of phreek and the dtt's. The game is old school, I just dont think it would be hard for anyone with a bit of skills to hack tankpit. I guess given the fact that the game is based on some pretty old code it might be hard for a new school developer to hack code hes not totally familiar with.

003 phreek may have shown the dev's a weakness thus leading to tankpits demise however that doesnt mean its his fault.
Zubby you could have just said it like that.

I can't believe it took page 17 of this thread to figure out phr33k being able to successfully exploit the code coincidentually was followed by tankpit being shut down.
