SW uTank timeline
uTanks time line:
4 years ago: Project to clone BF is started. Not playable.
3 years ago: Not playable.
2 years ago: Started over from scratch because their first attempt to make the game was so full of problems it was not salvageable.
1 year ago: Lots of bugs, but the game is kinda playable. Lots of old players come back to try it but most of them don't like it and don't stick around.
10 months ago: Sun Wolf makes cheats for uTanks that still work to this day.
6 months ago: Lots of bugs. No motivation to fix them. I was on the bug tracker at this time and 75% of the bugs scheduled for the 2 week increments were not touched. Most of the ones that were closed were by me and I only had partial code access. Tons of excuses like "we all have lives", etc. Game is way out of balance and devs don't listen to the numerous essays players have written on how to improve it.
5 months ago: Sun Wolf makes bots for uTanks to show that players just how valuable their existence is: a computer program running in the background can accomplish the same if not more than they are accomplishing with their time.
3 months ago: Lots of bugs. Tournaments pretty much every day. Nobody really plays other than the tournaments, so they just keep running tournaments. 95% of those tournaments suck and are pure luck or full of shady behavior. Disappointed players like myself question why we are still playing them. Game still crashes after (if not during) every tournament and spends more time offline than online.
2 weeks ago: Lots of bugs. Game has gone down hill in popularity over the last few months. With a "screw the players, let them eat cake" mentality, the game is shut off for "a few months". The goal is for players to be in withdrawl and all come running back when the final release is done. They are rewriting the fundamental code of the game for the 3rd or 4th time. Clearly incompetent the first few times around.
1 week ago: Tankpit has just started and is more stable after 3 days than uTanks was after 3 years. They're also getting a lot of old players back, including many who hated uTanks. Most people are giving positive feedback for tankpit. Kevin: "Tankpit sucks, uTanks is so much better, we're not worried, blah blah." Meanwhile Kevin is [supposedly] hacking tankpit. Suddenly uTanks is putting 80 hours a week into getting their game back online. Suddenly they don't have lives anymore and it's become a big priority. "Someone figure out the exact fuel values from tankpit, there may be an award for you."
uTanks now: Copying features from tankpit. Doing pretty much anything they can to try to get players back. Resuming "biweekly tournaments" in a hope that people won't completely forget about them.
future. scenario 1: Final client is released. VK and Sylar are pphing hard 24/7 to see who will be #1. They both have onyx dots. Everyone else is playing tankpit instead. 987 and okisme pop in for every tourny to snipe some cups. Kevin decides to schedule tournaments every day again to increase activity, but instead everyone just gets bored of the tournies and stops playing them.
future. scenario 2: Tankpit closed down. uTanks has lots of bugs and the developers have lives again, or simply don't know how to fix them. Final client may or may not be released, most people won't care. Most of the players have vanished into the darkness from whence they came.
future. scenario 3: Both games are running. A few hardcore pphers who love SH and free killing are playing uTanks. The oldies who loved BF along with newer/different skill level players and the majority of people who don't have something personally invested in uTanks, are playing tankpit.
