Advice for newbs like me ?

Postby Xenthoz » Sun Jan 15, 2012 3:21 pm

Last time I played Battlefield, I was 11 years old. Ever since then I haven't played this game.

I remember great legends like TheRedOctober, Getchya etc... but I don't remember how to properly play the game. Basically I've been told not to quit low, play the tank - don't play the rank, fight on land, don't stay on the water all day, etc. I'm also a solo player, since that's where the fun is at and the legends are born. At least that's what people tell me and I can't be arsed to find a team.

What I need is some real advice at playing this game. You see, people are very keen on using the "My Dog Plays Better Than You" button. But due to the inability to chat in-game apart from a set amount of sentences / words I don't really learn anything. I was wondering what I did to upset them ?

Example.
I, as a blue lieut, are being raided by a group of orange players, all I do is scan the area for fuel, run, shoot, but mostly run, since my health can't keep up and the next moment I'm being called "Lame!" "My Dog Plays Better Than You" etc.

Example 2.
I get attacked by a serg, who can't really do all that much and I mostly, fire some shots, lay back and save some equipment because I don't really feel like wasting too much on a useless fight. Again "MDPBTY".

Example 3.
2 colonels on top of me, I'm trying to survive while dealing some damage, but when I get low, I'll teleport and heal up. Again "MDPBTY".

What am I doing wrong ? What do these people expect ? Especially that orange raid, am I supposed to die and then they'll be pleased ? Or do they seriously expect me to win against a bunch of them, kill 2 colonels and rage all my missiles down up on a corp / serg / lieut, or whatever the case may be, who can't kill me anyway ?

I got a little carried away there, don't read this the wrong way, this is just a peaceful request for some in-game tips, that could make me a better player and less of a thorn in the eye of the big "legends" on here. 8-)

I will try to help.

Example 1. You say you run, shoot some but mainly run, yes the idea is to stay alive BUT not by running away. The idea of taking a raid is you should shoot back as much as possible, let your fuel get a little low just try to time it so you don't use shields between getting fuel. When you land on a fuel and if fills you only 3/4 of the way its fine, just shoot back 1 less time the next round. Idea is to shoot back and get as low as possible with out dieing, don't be afraid to turn your shields on. Also do not be afraid of death.

Example 2. Well this could be a good player just being a low rank and wanting to get some points from you, you should fight anything and everything really, all points count even if they are a low rank remember if you kill them you will rank up if your leuit. Try and kill every1 its fun that way.

Example 3. MDPBTY is also used by myself and others, even when your doing nothing wrong, we say it and it will make you try harder to get lower, shoot more usually resulting in a death, there are also some noobs out there who don't have a clue how to play and say it regardless of how your doing.

Hey ignore those messages anyway, just aim to get as low as possible with out death and shoot back as much as you can with out dieing. You will soon improve in time, you'll probably see some people get as low as hell and keep surviving its just practice. Practice, practice, practice you'll get there in the end. You will notice most legends had :heroic: because they stuck to 1 tank and took those deaths.

I see so the lesson for me should be :

- get closer to dieing
- time my escapes
- use shields from time to time.

When exactly should I use my shields, up until now I haven't really used them.

Thanks for the great advice :)

EDIT : Oh, btw, so what you're saying is, that it's a point game and not so much a rank game ?

I say just try and survive, dont give up and make the players work.
Don't be afriad of the water, use it to your advantage if possible.
Use shields as much as you want to keep you alive longer. The longer you last the better it looks to others.
And rank doesn't really mean much in the end when everyone judges you by the quality of the player rather the awards and rank.

I see, well, I got my triple star just now, mainly by playing solo. Although that last fight was kind of an 3vs1 situation... I guess I can start dropping ranks and gaining skill now :p

Just have fun, do your best, help out your allies. When you improve your skills a lot you can find new fun in taking raids and seeing how narrowly you can survive.

yea...this game is more about survival than points. Once points are intoduced, players get carried away. Especially those that covet #1 spot

Using the water to your advantage? Maybe the smaller lakes in some maps, or if you tele onto an obstacle or a ferry and right back off it with out moving it. Everybody will cry 'water baby' etc.. if players use water.

Nothing wrong with using the water. Too many players have water phobia which probably stems from only playing desert or rocks. The goal of a raid is to do as best you can, and if that involves using ferries or obstacles or whatnot, then go for it.

these "rules" are only made up from players theres real no guidelines but it is expected a fight be put up instead of running like an ethiopian chicken. no one really likes to get death medals but main tanks are usually the ones that get the most.

fightings more fun than running. and fighting gives a rep. and the more you fight back the more people tend to realize youre not an easy kill so it becomes a lot more fun to battle. and also people will eventually stop trying to chase and kill you as constantly as you did when you werent as good, realizing there's weaker prey to be had on the field.

Re: Advice for newbs like me ?

Some pointers to take the best possible raid.

1. Observe where the mob/raid has been in the last 5 minutes and avoid this area(s). Try to avoid vast areas of land in the middle of the map (unless it's Apps) and aim for the edges, areas next to water, or rock formations. People typically try to avoid filling in all three of these areas because they can be time-consuming. As such, there's usually lots of virgin fuel sitting there. With regards to rock formations, they also provide cover from duals for you.

2. Generally speaking, if you're teleporting off your raiders' screen in your average raid 4-6v1, you want to open your map around half fuel. This gives you a chance to give the mini map a quick glimpse for yellow dots and to quickly decide where to teleport. Between the time your map opens and you clicking a spot to teleport to, you should only be hit by 3 duals tops. You will want to teleport a millisecond sooner if the fuel you're going after is on the same screen, as you will not only be hit by homings upon landing, but you'll be getting slammed with duals right away, too.

3. Armors: When you teleport in a land-dominated map (like Rox or Des), you should be landing with roughly 1/3-1/5 fuel max in a 4-6v1. Obviously, the higher amount goes hand in hand with the higher number of raiders. In order to stretch your armors out as much as possible, you want to time them so you get hit with 2 (3 if you're feeling cocky) homings and for the rest to hit your armors. You can typically accomplish this by radaring as soon as you land and turning on your armors right after. Your move will be queued in perfectly for my strategy. Also, ideally, you want to avoid using armors when you're being shot at with duals, as you will more than likely have plenty of chances to waste them when you run into one or two dry screens.

4. Remember this is just a game. Losing rank isn't worth you or anyone else having a bad time. There are presently a LOT of players (in this game and uTanks) who are playing like absolute noobs by running from or quitting on every raid. This may sound like crying, but in all honesty, it's absolutely no fun for someone like me with 40 deaths in 20 total hours in this game to take raids nonstop for hours on end but to find that the same players who don't hesitate to mob refuse to risk their rank 1v1 or in a small counter raid.

Let me know if that helps.

Thx Wardizzle for giving me some insight in actual strategies.

I do have to admit that, although I try to take a raid of 3-4 tanks. More often, I get jumped by 5 or 6, all part of the same team. And I'm sorry to say this, but then I just quit. I refuse to fight a bunch of people, using teamspeak or whatever to gank 1 person, just because they can't play this game solo. If that makes me a low quiter, that's fine with me, but I do not and will not fight well-coordinated teams, just so they can herp-derp my corpse.

Sounds like you're used to playing some MMORPGs ;) Just like in those games though, in BF people are measured by how well they can do against those uneven numbers.

Aaah, yep :p

Kalonline, Silkroad, World of Warcraft, Allods online, Vindictus, PW:I, Rohan : Blood Fued, ...

Anyway, I agree that it shows skill to take raids, but IMHO, not those raids.

like others said above, just try your best. I can understand why you dont want to take on a team of players. Just keep playing.

One really good tip is pay ALOT of attention to your fuel bar. If your fighting a raid, your fuel will most likely drop at the same percent every round. Paying attention you can figure out exactly how many shots you can shoot, when to teleport etc. Makes it alot easier instead of guestimating if you can get another shot in etc.

Alot of the posts in this thread gives really good advice. Id say avoid quitting when a team raids you. this is where you get to prove yourself, and eventually get on a team yourself. Playing on a team is the most fun you will have in this game, and youll get to meet alot of other players.

However the game is still very early, and like others have pointed out i think playing a solo tank till shiny atleast is the way to go instead of instantly bringing a team to the new game.

Since I can't teleport to your house and check whether you froze or not, I wouldn't have had a clue.
