It was good. You couldn't have figure that out at all. The real ending is literary brilliance.

***SPOILER ALERT***

He didn't relapse at all. "To live a monster or to die a good man?" He chose to die once he knew what he had done. That couldn't have been figured out by anyone before the movie was released. This is why I only talk to certain people about what to go see. Just can't trust most people when it comes to art.

So he did figure out that they were doing experiments at the facility? and faced with living a lie or being killed but doing the right thing?

OR

Did he actually kill his wife and now that he realizes that, rather die?

The latter. He feels directly responsible for his children's deaths because he didn't get her help. He says this when he wakes up after they tell him the truth. They weren't doing experiments at all I don't think. It wasn't really about that. I saw the movie as an internal struggle. The real scenes were the dream scenes. The actual happenings were just the setting, the background.

SPOILER

I figured he was crazy once he started having the headaches, I was wrong, in thinking the Mark Ruffalo character was just a skitzo, not real person. I thought I remember him not talking when company was around, then when I thought back I realized I was wrong. And he regressed back at the end, forgot that he killed his wife and all that. But it all did happen, and that was a legit mental asylum, nothing bad was happening in the lighthouse.

he purposes died in the end

b/c the head guy said that if they didnt go through with this experiment to let him think and do what his mind was telling him, that they would be shut down. this was their last effort to see if there faciality would stay up and running. he chose to die a good man rather than live like a monster, he forshadowed himself...he was completely fine, he came back to his normal state just as they said would happen, but he knew it was a wrong and put him through alot of pain, so he died as a good man by destroying that place instead of living like a monster....

idk if that makes sense to you guys, but in my head it does. it took me like 5 minutes after the movie ended to figure it out...

I don't think thats the ending. I don't remember them saying the place would be shut down either, rather it was his last chance to remember it all or else he gets the labotamy. I dunno, I was pretty certain he just regressed and didn't actually chose to get it done. I think when they cut up his brain that would be closer to "living like a monster" anyways... he was blocking it out and pretending to be a marshall still in his head, because that was his minds last attempt to "live like a good man" =\ Thats how I interpretted it lol.

Bro, the "live a monster, die a good man" line is clear evidence that he was completely conscious of his real self. He did not regress. Rather, as he said before, he felt responsible for his children's death and thus thought himself a monster. He could no longer live with himself this way, so he chose to get the surgery.

I know what you mean, but he already had regressed before, and he clearly was convinced of it during the actual movie. I don't know, maybe there is no clear answer.

Did he say the "live a monster" line at the very end? If so, maybe you are right =\ damn I have to watch it again lol.
